Liquid Lounge: Getting Ready for the 8th Anniversary…
The Jose Cuervo Underwater Bar will be 8 years old on May 5th, 2008. Hopefully, Sue Cocking, the Miami Herald Outdoor Writer will find the time to visit with her photographer. The bar sits in 20 feet of water, about 200 yards east of Nikki Beach at the southern end of Miami Beach.
The Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach - www.ecomb.org - has embraced the idea of reestablishing a natural reef near 3rd Street and Ocean Drive that was covered by sand when the beach was ‘renourished’ in 2003. Listen to www.blogtalkradio.com/kenenglish for more information.
Coral Gables Opera just recorded the American Ideal IV concert for WLRN-TV Channel 17. The concert will be on the PBS station during the summer. This a five minute highlight video: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fF3-Ufz8-LE. More will be posted later. Check out www.coralgablesopera.com for more information.
Speaking of ECOMB, they initiated an unique private-sector program to help keep Miami Beach clean. The Eco-Art Gallery by the Sea is a project to find sponsors for artwork placed on 204 trash cans that line the beach from Government Cut to South Beach. Earthday was the debut. Alliance for Reef Conservation
Project AWARE’s CoralWatch monitoring, implemented in partnership with the University of Queensland, Australia in 2005, collects information on the intensity of coral bleaching and recovery.
Since 1997, Reef Check has carried out an annual global scientific survey of human impacts on coral reefs.
Project AWARE and Reef Check encourage divers to volunteer for these programs and help track the condition of coral reefs.
“The joint efforts of Project AWARE and Reef Check aim to boost public awareness and action for critical conservation initiatives,” said Project AWARE Foundation, Director, Jenny Miller Garmendia. “Volunteer divers are at the core of these monitoring programs and are natural advocates for declining underwater ecosystems.”
The partnership was announced at the launch of the year-long International Year of the Reef 2008 campaign in Washington, DC at the end of January.
According to Dr. Gregor Hodgson, Founder and Executive Director, Reef Check, “Reef Check is pleased to be work with Project AWARE because the organizations share the same goal of involving more volunteer divers in coral reef monitoring and conservation. All of the data gathered will be used to interpret trends in global coral status.”
